Head of Development

This newly created position is established to lead and manage the software development team that supports the Insurance business. The business is undertaking an operational improvement programme of work and seeks to exploit advanced technology solutions to streamline and automate large parts of the business.

The head of Development will work collaboratively with the wider business to deliver innovative software solutions that are fit for purpose and meet the business needs. This will necessitate the creation and implementation of a strategy to improve the quality of service that the development team delivers, and to ensure the quality and technical approach is robust, exploits technology as appropriate, and produces efficiently supportable systems for business use.

This position has been created to develop a new risk management reporting system and there is overall recognition within the business that this new initiative and development programme will considerably enhance business growth, operational effectiveness and most importantly competitive differentiators.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • To lead and manage a team of software developers supporting the Talbot business group
  • To drive the strategic direction of software solutions that meet business needs, taking into account emerging and legacy technologies
  • Accountable for the delivery of software solutions to the business

Team Management

  • To manage the development team, plan and priorities workloads, ensure skills and capabilities are sufficient to deliver the strategy, and maintain good working practices
  • Coaching and performance management of the development team
  • To ensure team members understand and appreciate the wider business environment and processes sufficiently and engage directly with end users where appropriate

Software development and solutions

  • To keep up to date with the latest software development technologies and methodologies
  • To drive consistent standards and approaches
  • To be instrumental in determining build or buy decisions
  • To select, implement and maintain the development tool set necessary to deliver high quality solutions
  • To deliver well-structured and documented code
  • To ensure solutions are future-proof and easy to maintain, support and update
  • To deliver code that is well tested and strive for error-free output
  • To embed a structured and well-managed development environment

Cross-team Collaboration

  • To work with other members of the IT organisation and ensure consistency and compatibility of solutions
  • To ensure the development team understand the needs of the business and work collaboratively to achieve a high quality solution

Candidate Profile

Strong stakeholder management is essential with a collaborative style imperative as you will be required to ascertain specific requirements and identify areas that will underpin a robust and efficient system to support the business going forward. The role holder will provide IT vision and technology innovation in particular around current and future needs.
