Data Migration Developer

£39K + Package - 2 year Fixed Term Contract
My client is looking for a versatile business-focused data migration developer to work on business change projects in the Development section of their IT department.
They are in the process of introducing a number of major new systems, and need to develop a number of ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) processes to move data from the old systems that are being decommissioned onto new platforms. Some of these new systems will be designed and built in house, and other will be commercial COTS packages. They expect to develop the ETL processes in C running on Linux, or may choose to use specialist toolsets to support the process.
Responsibilities
* To design, build and test new software applications.
* To maintain, support and enhance existing operational applications.
* To configure, implement and support packaged software where appropriate.
* To estimate and agree the cost and timescale of programming and associated development activity.
* To design software applications and systems within large programmes of work that will provide cost-effective solutions to an agreed specification of user requirements.
Qualifications and experience
* Degree level or equivalent.
* Recent practical software development experience in large IT department, including design, program build, testing/debugging and implementation of data migration processes running against relational databases and COTS packages. The necessary depth and breadth of experience will require at least one year's recent experience in an IT services department or company experience of large or complex systems
* Recent demonstrable knowledge and experience of developing in C on Linux.
* Recent demonstrable knowledge and experience of developing in a .NET frame work would be an advantage.
* Knowledge and experience of software tools, development methods and standards
* Good knowledge of technical platforms and impact on business systems
* Ability to work from design specifications and follow programming standards
* Ability to understand program flow and logic and OO design concepts
* Can provide clear, accurate and appropriate written documentation
* Knowledge of programming and / or database efficiency and performance issues.
* Windows and /or Unix operating systems.
* Oracle and/or SQL Server databases. Ingres would also be an advantage.
* Theory and practice of quality control and assurance in relation to programming and design
* Ability to produce design specifications that meet user requirements
